What you can watch at home: Horizons, The Decameron, Bad Boys Until the End, and the second round of the RPL

Taika Waititi directed a new Terry Gilliam and Netflix adapted Giovanni Boccaccio anew. The directorial debut of David Cronenberg's daughter and the triumphant return of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.

Western of the Week Horizons Part 1

Kevin Costner has filmed a life project about the conquest of the American West 1863. Horizon is an outpost in the future Arizona territory exposed to Apache attacks. Only Francis Kittredge (Sienna Miller) and her daughter survive the last massacre and temporarily find refuge in an army fort under the protection of Lieutenant Trent Gephart (Sam Worthington). Despite the unfavorable situation, settlers from the East are heading towards Horizon, and in Wyoming, horse trader Hayes Ellison (Costner) gets into a fight while defending the sex worker Marigold (Abbey Lee).

The paths of the main characters are likely to cross in Horizon. Costner's Western epic is expected to last about 12 hours, and not all characters have appeared on screen yet (Giovanni Ribisi is supposed to appear in the sequel). All hope lies in streaming. The film was lukewarmly received at the box office, and although filming for the third part has begun, the studios are not very interested in releasing the second. As they say, hurry up to see it.

"He didn't die in the finale" of the Week Driver

The action debut of the director of Doctor Who and Sandman Former soldier and motocross champion Jack (Oliver Jackson-Cohen from The Haunting of Hill House) is in a difficult financial situation, so he agrees to pick up a mysterious package in the North Sea. When the client does not show up and the man decides to keep the cargo for himself, his younger brother disappears, and Jack faces a dangerous motorbike odyssey through the nocturnal criminal city of Hartlepool.

A dynamic feature debut by Jamie Childs, who gained his initial experience in popular TV series. The film also stars Rory McCann from Game of Thrones and Jenna Coleman from Doctor Who.

Cheat Sheet of the Week "The Theory of Prime Numbers"

A French drama about mathematics and emotions

A brilliant doctoral student, Marguerite (Ella Rumpf), has spent three years trying to prove Goldbach's conjecture under the guidance of Professor Werner (Jean-Pierre Darroussin). When he takes on another doctoral student, Lucas (Julien Frison) from Oxford, who makes a calculation error before an important presentation and then decides to take a break from mathematics to sort things out.

Their new neighbor, the uninhibited dancer Noa (Sonya Bonnie Eboumbu), will help her. A drama by Anna Novion, who directed the popular French series "The Bureau," shown in Cannes.

Isekai of the Week That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Season 1

A funny fantasy about an office worker's career rise

37-year-old office worker Satoru Mikami dies from a robber's knife and is reborn in a fantasy world. Since his last regret was people's tendency to bleed, the new appearance of the employee is slime. Of course, it's not easy; Satoru can level up, remember other people's techniques, and even learn entire crafts by digesting the corresponding specialists. Initially, the newcomer befriends the captive dragon Veldora, who gives him a new powerful name - Rimuru Tempest.

One of the most popular Isekai stories of the present - stories of people being reborn in a fantasy world - and the flagship franchise of the 8bit Studio (Blue Prison Blue Lock, Fresh Air Camp). The second and third seasons will be available on Kinopoisk on July 30th and August 5th, respectively.

Waititi of the Week "Time Bandits," TV Series

A cheeky remake of Terry Gilliam's cult film

Eleven-year-old Kevin (Kal-El Tak) loves history and knows a lot, for example, about antiquity, Maya football, and Chinese pirates. The opportunity to visit legendary places at the height of their heyday literally presents itself in his room when the boy meets Penelope's gang (Lisa Kudrow). After stealing a treasure map from the Supreme Being (Taika Waititi), they move through space and time, trying to acquire as many artifacts as possible.

Terry Gilliam's somewhat forgotten comedy about wanderings through historical and mythical places was entrusted to Waititi and his regular co-author Jemaine Clement for updating, who not only worked on the screenplay but also played the embodiment of evil.

Classic of the Week The Decameron, TV Series

Italian wealthy people hide from the plague and tell stories

1348, Europe is in the grip of a pandemic. The noble Pampinea (Zasha Mamet) invites a group of Florentine nobles and their servants to go to the Tuscan fields to wait out the Black Death. There, they will wait out the plague with wine, group entertainment, and exciting stories.

The latest interpretation of Giovanni Boccaccio's almanac is taken over by Kathleen Jordan, the screenwriter of the Young Bounty Hunters. The tragic, erotic, and satirical scenes from the 15th century are played by Tony Hale, Tanya Reynolds, J.Essica Plummer, Fares Fares, and John Hannah.

Action movie of the Week Bad Boys for Life

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence celebrate a triumphant return

Miami detective veterans Mike Lowry (Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) are busy. The former has gotten married, the latter almost had a heart attack at his wedding, but both are brought back to reality when their deceased boss Captain Howard (Joe Pantoliano) is accused of having cartel connections. The tough guys in uniform are sure something is being framed on the boss.

The fourth action film about the Miami Homies was once again directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, whose Bad Boys for Life became the most successful film in the franchise (the first two were directed by Michael Bay). The new old-school action film is nearing the $400 million mark, indicating that the demand is still high.

Cronenberg of the Week "The Humane Method"

A science-fiction thriller starring Jay Baruchel and Peter Gallagher

Amid the environmental crisis and overpopulation of the Earth in the future, some countries' governments have introduced voluntary and compulsory euthanasia. In Canada, for example, the families of those who agree to end their lives receive a solid reward. Former television presenter Charles York (Peter Gallagher) invites his adult children to dinner to announce his decision to help the planet. Together with his second wife Dong Kim (Uni Park), they have agreed to participate in the program. However, the family gathering does not go as planned.

A futuristic satire and the full-length debut of Caitlin Cronenberg, the daughter of the king of body horror, who directed a short film about her father's death. The numerous Yorks and agents of the Civil Strategy Department are played by Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire, Enrico Colantoni, and Colm Feore.

Friday Movies The Impossible

A disaster film starring Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor, and Tom Holland

This week's pick is Juan Antonio Bayona's ambitious English-language debut.

Today, Bayona is one of the most successful Spanish-speaking advertising directors, having directed Jurassic World 2, the Lord of the Rings series, and the Oscar-nominated Snow Society. And 15 years ago, only Guillermo del Toro, who produced the horror film The Orphanage, believed in him.

Then the Spaniard was invited to Hollywood, where he shot a drama based on true events about the tsunami that hit Thailand in 2004. And everyone has already noticed the director.

News of the Week "Matador"

The new Pedro Almodovar in Venice is a reason to revisit his early films

In the competition of one of the most important European film festivals, "The Room Next Door" is showing with Tilda Swinton, Julianne Moore, and John Turturro - the first English-language feature film by the Spaniard, in which a son, a mother, and her friend work out their relationships.

Almodovar loves a tangle of dramas and passions, which one can see after watching the grotesque and candid thriller about the love of two serial killers (Antonio Banderas and Assumpta Serna) by himself.

Classic of the Week Veep

A satirical (and prophetic) series starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus

In recent years, viewers have often been reminded of Armando Iannucci's long-running political satire about Selina Meyer (Louis-Dreyfus), a Democratic senator from Maryland who became vice president. In later seasons, she was already a contender for the top spot, and the scandal around the Trump election in 2020 was much like the conflict in the series.

Now that Joe Biden is not running for another term and Vice President Kamala Harris is planning to take his place in the race, Iannucci's show could once again prove prophetic.
